Assembly Member Anna Caballero’s bill, AB 300, could help more Monterey County families with young children access affordable, quality child care. Not only would it authorize Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz counties to develop and implement individualized county child care subsidy plans, it would also allow for more families to qualify for child care subsidies by giving our county flexibility in setting eligibility and fees for these subsidies. AB 300 would also allow flexibility for child care providers to increase reimbursement rates.
This bill will be heard in committee later this month and to showcase its importance in Monterey County, we are asking you to help! Letters of support are needed by Thursday, April 13th and can be sent to Enedina Garcia at Enedina.Garcia@asm.ca.gov.
Below are several ways you can champion AB 300 as an organization or individual:
Organizations:
- Sign on to support AB 300 on behalf of your organization.
- First 5 Monterey County has created a letter for you to download and use as a template on your letterhead. Feel free to add more detail as it relates to your organization. Once complete, scan and send the letter to Enedina Garcia and cc Karen Gorman at First 5 Monterey County.
- Gather parent support letters through your interactions with families.
- Share the Parent Fact Sheet with families during meetings, playgroups, child care facilities, etc.
- Ask parents to share their story on the Parent Support Letter (in English and Spanish). Real life stories are very important to lawmakers; they need to understand why AB 300 is necessary for Monterey County. This is a critical step for AB 300 to be successful. Parents can also modify the online letters here if they prefer to do this electronically.
- Collect completed parent support forms. Request pick up from Karen Gorman at First 5 Monterey County or call (831) 444-8549, ext. 14 by Thursday, April 13. We will collect and mail all support letters to Assembly Member Caballero’s office.
